I haven't been a member for long so I never even known there was a chat but it'd be cool to have one + its should almost definitely be at the bottom or maybe even down the side?

maybe even down the side?
the problem i see with it being down the side is that people with smaller screens would have to scroll over to see one or the other, for people with big screens its fine (like me) but for people with old computers or just small screens it can get very irritating

I'm going to put it down the bottom as a trial, we could also try putting it down the side at some point.

Personally, I don't like the idea of putting it down the side. I use a netbook quite often with a small screen, so it would take up quite a lot of the viewport.

maybe a facebook (sort of) chat...
it should stick to the bottom of the browser (Facebook Part) and if you should be able to click on it to make it expand.
One last thing maybe it should change colour, flash or something?

Oooh a chat docked to the browser, that's an interesting idea!

Our chat service currently does not use the IRC protocol.
If there is a general consensus for this, I can look into moving to IRC.
We do provide a proper chat interface, at /chat

The problem with using IRC is that there are lots of clients and Java applets to download, but few pretty ones that require no plugins or downloads and work in the browser, like the way our current ShoutBox works.
I am actively seeking one that will sit in the forum's layout.
